Gay Magazines in
the UK
There are a number of publications
for the gay audiences in the United Kingdom. Magazines for gay men,
lesbian women, and gender-neutral gay publications fill a broad
spectrum of journalistic styles and focus on a variety of subjects.
The best-selling gay magazine in the United Kingdom is Attitude,
launched in 1994. It is a high-profile publication, that is
distributed internationally as well. Its celebrity covers have
included Tony Blair, Sacha Baron Cohen in his Bruno persona, the
late Heath Ledger, cult gals Kylie Minogue and Madonna, gay icons
like Elton John, George Michael and Rufus Wainwright, and Harry
Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, whose interview for Attitude was
his first ever interview for a gay publication; in it he spoke out
vehemently against homophobia. Attitude has profiled a number of
important topics, including the predicament of gay migrants who seek
asylum, increase in conservative politics, and has covered UK and US
presidential elections.
Gay Times and Diva are brother-and-sister papers for gay men and
lesbians, respectively. Gay Times is a well--rounded publication,
which includes political items, humor and satire, art, reviews, a
lifestyle section, as well as advertisements for everything from
escorts to counsellors. Gay Times were behind the very first
advertising campaign to feature a gay kiss, which gained them both
notoriety and increased popularity among their readers.
Diva is the top lesbian publication in the United Kingdom. It also
has a broad scope, and includes features on a variety of lesbian and
bisexual political and lifestyle issues. Many gay and lesbian icons
give in-depth interviews to Diva, and the magazine's covers have
included such celebrities as Scarlett Johannson, Mia Kirshner,
Katherine Moenning, Lucy Lawless, and Sharon Stone.

Another prominent lesbian publication in the United Kingdom is
g3--an award-winning free magazine available both in paper versions
at gay venues, and in digital format on their website. g3 also
features celebrity interviews, but also has regular features on
travel, fashion, and arts, as well as film, music, and performances
reviews.
Another free magazine, this one for gay men, is Bent, which can be
found in gay clubs and bars throughout the United Kingdom. It is
primarily entertainment-focused: celebrity interviews, entertainment
reviews, gossip--but it also has a substantial lifestyle section, in
which it provides health advice and fashion overview. Racier
features include Bent's profiles of adult entertainers and erotic
fiction.
Boyz is essentially a gay tabloid publication, focusing on
celebrities, the gay scene, and nightly listings of clubs,
performances, and other entertainment venues.
Finally, Fyne Times is a free magazine for both gays and lesbians.
It is family-friendly; lacking in adult content, it can be found in
libraries, youth clubs, hotels and hostels. Fyne Times includes
sections on lifestyle, health, family (including information on
issues of adoption and fostering), and features information about
youth groups and helplines. It also includes educational content
about important LGBT history dates and persons, and promotes
awareness of events like World AIDS day. |
